jalama beach park
i spent this past memorial day weekend at a very packed jalama beach park (santa barbara county). it was windy. really really windy. in fact, the wind only subsided for a few hours over the 4 nights that i camped there. needless to say, the surf was blown out and beach activities were limited to quick walks between campsites. we found that the nearby ranch land was a viable option for exploring rather than getting sand-blasted on the beach.
next up – a baja surfari?
Nike Lowers Pro
happy to be posted up at trestles for the week to photog/video the nike 6.0 sponsored WQS surf event this week.
Cuyamaca Rancho State Park
this past week a few friends and i went camping out in cuyamaca rancho sp, just an hour inland from the city of san diego. we climbed cuyamaca peak and relaxed in the oak-shaded campgrounds. the weather in the spring is ideal for hiking inland san diego providing cool nights and warm days. plus, many of the spring annual flowers were in bloom.

Bamboo Bike Studio – Component Build
i had the pleasure of working with piper at the BBS SF HQ in march. she gracefully outfitted a bamboo bike frame with wheels, brakes, handlebar, crank, peddles, etc. working on an instructional video so that students who build their frames at the studio can complete their bikes in the comfort of their own space at a later time.
Valdez
just got back from a 3 day trip to valdez with my brother and a couple of his buddies. we got real lucky with the weather and snow conditions. we were able to do a day of back country, heli-ski, and snow machine access skiing, the trifecta! heading back to california tomorrow but i’ll update these two posts when things slow down next week.
Snowbird Glacier, AK
back from 4 days up at snowbird glacier. it’s a day’s trek in and we had some poor weather for a couple of the days but when the clouds finally broke we were on it and had the place to ourselves. a full gallery/write up is in the works.
[AK] days 1 & 2
A quick note before heading out into the wilderness for a few days – maddog got me all set up with touring gear and took me for a few laps at tin can (turnagain pass) as well as peak 3 (anchorage). All went well considering how small the boots are that my feet are jammed in. We’ll see how the next several days go.
Today we’re heading out to the Talkeetna mountains to tour the 20 mile mint-bomber traverse. We’ll be hut hopping and making some turns along the way. Not much room for camera gear but I’ll be bringing a few items to document the adventure.

alaska-bound
finally, heading to alaska. yesterday i packed up from baja towing two large duffels and my camera gear. had a 630 flight from SD this morning with a layover in seattle (where i am now). it would have been $40 to check two bags so for an additional $10 i was able to upgrade to first class (for the seattle leg only). certainly worth it! i should be in AK by 10pm tonight, excited!
Parting Note from the Boat
yesterday ended a relaitvely quick work trip (28 days) in the gulf of mexico and now i’m flying back to san diego. true to form, i’m hitting the ground running – arrive in SAN at 1pm and need to go to baja to pick up some camera equipment before turning around to catch a flight to SF. tomorrow i’ll be working with the bamboo bike studio again shooting video and photos for their new single speed kit. should be a busy day but it’s exciting to see these projects develop into final products.
then it’s off to anchorage alaska to spend 2 weeks with my brother – i’ll be bringing all my gear on this trip hoping to bring back some internet-worthy footage. maddog mentioned guns, chainsaws, beer, and skiing. shouldn’t be too hard. updates will be frequent.
